Spring Cleaning your “Top Three” for Psychological, Physiological, and Spiritual Health

The next four weeks can be magical for you, if you allow them to be! Take your own journey or follow me in mine, phenomenal things are about to happen! (I believe they will, therefore, they will!)

The beginning of April marks the first part of the second quarter of the year. It is a time when some people do their Spring cleaning, not just of their house, but of their mind, body, and spirit as well. For the next four weeks I will allow myself to experience a cleaning of self and will end in a renown re-discovery of who I really am. 

I decided to do this when I found myself feeling a pull from within a few months ago. I won’t go into details but I just knew it was time for me to reconnect and ground myself. Confused yet? Well, imagine this.. “Can you imagine waking up today without your past history of doubt, fear and the perceptions that limit you or keep you stuck in repetitive patterns? Can you imagine being able to design a deep and meaningful future based on your soul’s greatest expression and your heart’s deepest desires rather than on old, outdated, unmet needs and beliefs?” Now do you see where I am headed? Obviously, this is only reflecting in the realm of my spiritual self but I am expecting more to come!

Yes, I will also be cleaning other aspects of my life. I already started with what I call, “The Cleanse of the Fakey Facebook Friends”. You know what I’m talking about. I was one of “those people” who had over 2000 “friends” on facebook. Granted, most I had met at competitions, conventions, seminars, and the like. Others were “friends” of theirs who just liked what I posted, i guess. Either way, I went through and unfriended about 1300 people total. When no one tried to re-friend me, I actually felt good because initially I thought perhaps some people who get way too emotionally tied to their social media friends or followers would be upset or something. If that happened, they never let me know. Slightly off topic but can you believe they actually have a Facebook Poster? “Show your house guests, family, or roommate how popular you are on Facebook with a poster showing all your Facebook friends! Have up to 2000 friends printed on a 20″x40″ poster for just $20. Think that will impress Mom and Dad?” Wow.

Yeah, chopping that tree down was far over due. I also decided for the month of April, I will stay off Facebook and my email. My only communication will be through my phone ( gotta really know me to have that #) and through my Twitter account for brief interactions.

You may be wondering where fitness and health fit in here. Healthy nutrition is the best way to give your body the balanced nutrients it needs to work and function properly. We touched base on this before.Obviously cardiovascular exercise in the amount of 20-30 minutes a day and strength training.. I will also add in my meditation and Yoga (I’m getting better!), and I am still working on my Reiki as well.

Spring Cleaning the top three; Mind, Body, and Spirit (psychological, physiological, and spiritual) takes a cognitive effort, daily focus, and a willingness to grow, learn,and let go of all that is “cluttering” up your life…inside and out.

8 Easy Ways To Stay Focused On Healthy Lifestyle Changes

Recently I was speaking with someone who seemed to have lost their motivation for going to the gym, eating healthier, and improving their overall fitness. They stopped their food journal, went to the gym MAYBE two times a week if they didn’t get it in their head to not go when they left the parking lot of their employer, if they did that, they kept their appointment time one time that week. In short, they lost their WIT(Whatever It Takes)!

That’s right, they sank down the hole and lost their connectivity to why they began their journey in the first place. So, let’s say you are one of those people. This was the #1 reason people flop on their journey. Not lack of trainers and coaches, not lack of gym choices or places to workout or buy healthy foods, not lack of hope, or not enough knowledge according to the American Psychological and their survey called Stress in America. It was lack of willpower. Oh, I know you aren’t but let’s pretend for a moment that you are. How would you get it back? How would you motivate yourself to get back in to the swing of things and get your your WIT’s back?

1. Whatever It Takes: It may sound corney but the first thing to do is to get your mindset right. Where ever your mind goes, your body follows. So, before you even start to think about excuses, this is when you tell yourself “WHAT EVER IT TAKES!” You say this over and over. Get your physiology into it, use your arms, your legs, your torso and say it like you mean it, because you DO mean it, don’t you? Of course your do!

2: Review your goals- Are you setting SMART goals? Oh PLEASE tell me you are at least setting your goals! How can you get somewhere if you don’t know where you are going? I’m always surprised when I’m in a consultation with someone and I ask them what their goals are and they respond with very vague, “I wanna lose weight.” type of goals. No. That won’t work! You need to set SMART goals! Write them down, look at them every day.

3: Try a Vision Board- A Vision board will tune your brain into where you want to go. More and more people seem to understand the impact visioning can have on not just health and fitness successes but in many areas of your life. I prefer a board you have in your home that you look at each day, but Pinterest has certainly helped with allowing people to create and access boards where ever they are. No Excuses!

4: Stress Relief – There is no doubt whatsoever that stress can be a major energy zapper! Think about what your body feels like when it is stressed. All the muscles are tightened, and usually stress is something that most people allow to affect their bodies for a long period of time, not just a few minutes. There are many ways to relieve stress, from quiet walks in nature, to meditation and yoga. Even aromatherapy and massage. Learning stress coping techniques such as deep breathing will also help alleviate stress. 

5: Plan ahead – Oh it sounds so simple doesn’t it? let me tell you what, it sure helps with you already have that intention in your mind that you are doing what you set out to do! If it’s a workout, lay your clothes out in advance. If it’s dietary, advanced food prep ( and take it with you) is the best way to stay on track and avoid getting things on the run when you are hungry or want munchies. 

6: Make it a ritual or appointment with yourself. If your goal is to go running every morning, work it in to your morning routine or ritual. If it’s after work ( when people tend to be more tired) DO NOT GO HOME AND SIT ON THE COUCH OF DOOM!! Take your workout clothes with you and either change at the gym or, in the restroom of your employer and go straight to your running start point, or gym. We all know that if you’ve worked a long hard day and you come home and sit on the couch, it’s like your butt get’s super glued to it. Don’t do it!

7. Share your goals – Find an accountability partner or let others know what your (SMART) goals are. Ask them for help..only if you REALLY want it though. Some people will ride you like a horse if you tell them your goal is to go to the gym 5 days a week and you miss a day because you are sick (really sick).

8. Track your progress – One way I have found to work is by using a journal to write in each night that I did was I was supposed to do. I label how many days in a row and how I felt before and after my workout or ate my foods. I write the time of day, the date and the day. For food this is a great way to recognize how your body reacts to certain foods during the day. Some people use a calender and put a big red X on the day they do what they should have done. The visual part of that is that you don’t want to break the success chain of big red X’s. 

 

Women should lift weights, but do they REALLY need to lift heavy?

I just got through reading an article directed toward women saying that they need to lift heavy weights several times a week and to, “Put the 5-pound dumbbells away, just put them back in the corner where you found them. Light them on fire while you’re at it.”  It also mentioned the picture in the fitness magazine of the woman standing on one leg on the bosu while lifting a 5lb db is not the workout they (women) need. I’m sorry, but if you ask me, women, or anyone for that matter need several different types of workouts from weights, to cardio, to yoga and pilates. I congratulate the women who take the time to find a workout they love and work it into their busy schedules to do 3-5 times a week!

It even went on to say, “ANYTHING you read in any women’s fitness magazine is suspect. Actually, it’s not just suspect — you can be guaranteed that they’re feeding you inaccurate trash.” Wow. That’s a pretty bold statement. I’d tell the lady who wrote that article to check out Oxygen Magazine. It’s what got me started toward my first Women’s Physique Competition! Certainly NOT inaccurate trash!

So, let’s back up a bit and think about where this person is coming from and what exactly the message they are trying to relay is. Obviously I have no idea who this lady is that wrote this article or what her credentials are, but I think she was a little off base generalizing that every woman who wants to workout should,”put several 45-pound plates on a 45-pound barbell and deadlifting and squatting “. I agree that women should lift weights IF they are cleared to do so by their doctor. There are conditions of which lifting HEAVY weights as the person in the article advised every woman should do, is contradictory to what is truly beneficial to a persons health.

Instead of reading the article I read, I would recommend my clients read something more like this:

8 REASONS WOMEN SHOULD LIFT Or this Why Women Don’t (But Should) Lift Weights

I really liked #7 in the 8 reasons article, “As you age, you are at risk of losing both bone and muscle mass. Postmenopausal women are at a greater risk for osteoporosis because the body no longer secretes estrogen. Resistance training is an excellent way to combat loss of bone mass, and it decreases the risk of osteoporosis.”. Notice it said “RESISTANCE TRAINING”, not “LIFT HEAVY”. By the way, you can also do your own isometric resistance training if you don’t have access to weights or is you are rehabilitating an injury.

Lifting weights does have many benefits as we know, and by now most women are aware that they will NEVER look like Iris Kyle, the Ms Olympia (unnatural Ms.Olympia that you see on TV as opposed to the Natural Ms. Olympia Jodi Miller) by lifting some weights. Besides toning, tightening, and shaping the muscles into looking gorgeous body parts we all find attractive, they offer many benefits that are happening INSIDE the body that we can’t see!

Of course, if you are a woman looking to compete in Bodybuilding or power lifting competitions, obviously YES! You will have to lift heavy! That muscle doesn’t just multiply like bunnies mating! The people you see on stage take their sport very seriously and they work at it every single day. It takes hard work and dedication along with eating the right things, getting enough sleep, and more. That is INTENTIONAL muscle gains. They don’t lift what is heavy to them every single day though. High rep/lower weights and low rep/higher weigh days are worked into their workout routine along with how may sets and how many exercises for each body part.

Weighing the scale.. fat loss or hepatitis, and liver failure.. how about DEATH?

After watching the video (and I like Marc Lobliner because he is knowledgeable and has been in the bodybuilding industry for a long time). Sounds great right? What I REALLY like is that he goes through not just the ingredients but the possible side effects and specifies if you experience any of these to stop use immediately and see a physician. Way to go Marc! So, then this comes out October 8, 2013: 

OxyElite Pro Linked to 40 Cases of Liver Failure in Hawaii” was the first eye catching headline I saw right after I saw in my newsfeed on Facebook from a local news channel; 

“CONSUMER ALERT: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is investigating a growing number of reports of non-viral hepatitis in Hawaii that have led to 11 hospitalizations and one death.

The FDA said the common link between at least some of the cases appears to be a dietary supplement called OxyElite Pro which is sold nationwide through the Internet and retail stores.

The FDA said there have been 29 reports of the liver-damaging condition, with 24 sharing the OxyElite connection. 

“Share” to spread the word!”

 

Of course I went and read what comments were being shared on their post and most were about the FDA being shut down due to the Government being shut down, and you had those who just liked to hear themselves talk (they have no idea what a fat burner thermogenic is or why one would take one but still want to spout off about it and call people names), but this is some serious stuff.

  • There have been 29 cases of hepatitis in Hawaii and 24 of them said they used OxyElite Pro according to USA Today

Some people may remember when Jackd 3d (not a fat burner thermogenic but a Pre-Workout booster) was pulled from the shelves because people where dying (the military banned it after a few died during PT after taking it from heart attacks), but as soon.. AS SOON as they found it back on the shelves they were buying it up like it was going out of style saying, “That was the OLD formula”.. what are you, stupid?! Then just a couple months later we hear how the warehouse for GNC was raided and Billions of dollars worth of the “old formula” Jacked 3d were confiscated!

“We have hundreds and thousands of new ingredients being introduced into supplements without ANY safety data or information being provided.”

” Thanks to a law passed in 1994 , supplements unlike prescription drugs do not need FDA approval to get to market. Supplements and the stores that sell them are everywhere. In 1994 , there were 4,000 products on the market. What’s the status now? At least 80,000 new products.”

 

If you want to see how easy it is to get a supplement out there and able to be marketed without any data or information, the first thing that comes to mind is an experiment they did in the independent documentary, “Bigger, Stronger, Faster” 

If you haven’t watched this movie, I saw it in the theater when it came out and it views both sides of steroid use, but, there is a part in there where they make a supplement which has no backing on it and are able to distribute it, legally. My point being, just because you can buy a supplement off the shelve at a GNC, Vitamin Shoppe or local supplement store, doesn’t mean it is “safe” for use. 

Okay, back to my blog on the Oxyelite Pro. Anyone who has been in the bodybuilding “family” or has ever competed in a bodybuilding show has heard and has probably been told that this is a GREAT fat burner. When I saw this quote by Bill Cosby, I thought about how appropriate it was in so many things about life, love, and happiness. The focus on the taking of the chance, the risk and how we need to be willing to take that chance if we really want something badly enough, if we MUST change. What it didn’t get across was the point that we have to take this action NOW! I mean as soon as we know it is in front of our faces how we need to act on it. Set the momentum going and move in the direction we need to take.

Personally I can attach this to many areas of my life at this exact moment. I just finished week 4 of the Shaun T Focus T25.. (down 5lbs and 5.5″ in my waist and hips) but that had to start with something very small..the decision to take that chance and to focus on not just the workouts but the nutrition too. I know some people say this program doesn’t work and if they do say that I guarantee either they aren’t following the nutrition guide provided with this program, they aren’t putting the intensity into the workouts, or they aren’t doing the workouts 5 days a week…anyway you look at it, THEY AREN’T DOING THE PROGRAM!

Yes, “Everyone DOES have time for that” but do they also want to give it the energy vs sitting on their couch watching whatever show they “have to get home to watch!”? Do they want to make the changes to their food intake ( I stay away from the word “diet”) even though they’ve been told that doing so will provide them with more energy, clarity, regularity, and many more health benefits, but revert back to the old food items because it is “easier” or more fitting since they are back in their comfort zone of bad foods and excuses?

My goal with this blog is to help as many people I can with health, nutritional, and wellness information as well as provide you with the experiences I am going through while doing my workouts and fitness routines because guess what, It isn’t easy for me either!  Image  Sometimes you really do need to be your own hero. You need to put it in your head that this is something you aren’t going to negotiate anymore, something you’re not going to hide behind excuses anymore, something that you MUST do because if you don’t…think about it, what is the worst case scenario you can picture in your mind if you do not make the changes you need to make in your life to live the best quality, best health, best vitality, best adventurous or whatever the life if that you deserve to live… if you do not make these changes what are you doing to yourself RIGHT NOW?!

“Family loses 75lbs and SLASHES food budget in half”

This was the title I read when I began researching the importance of family fitness and the results of the Family Fitness Challenge which was aired on The Doctors tv show.

My daughter, myself,my brother, my other daughter, my nephew, and my niece at the entrance to Mt. Timpanogos Cave in Utah.

For my family, we are active, we eat healthy, we enjoy the outdoors…it’s part of our lifestyle. For many families it isn’t. The above picture was taken last week when we were hiking out in the mountains of Utah. That is myself with my daughters along with my brother and his two kids. Setting a great fitness example by hiking with them up through Mt. Timpanogos cave. Their little legs were tired but they did an awesome job!

Collectively, the four family members have lost 72 pounds over the past two months, and they slashed their food budget by more than half. Before they started the challenge, they were spending about $500 a week on food including groceries, dining out and takeout, Jackie says. Now that they’re preparing most of their meals at home, they’re spending less than $200 a week.

Parents sometimes need to lead by example. That means get off your butt and do something your family enjoys or try something new. Get on a bike, go dancing, play baseball, volleyball, basketball, roller blade or if it’s been awhile start off with a short walk and increase the distance, have you ever gone geocaching? Or try walking through the zoo  or an amusement park with a pedometer to track your steps and then document your steps daily with small increases daily on a fitness tracker. These trackers can be as simple as a notepad and pen posted somewhere where there is high traffic in the household or there are many online trackers and now more techy trackers like the fitbit tracker. Pretty cool little gadget there!

So why is Family Fitness so important?  One thing I read said, “Besides avoiding the alarming rate of type 2 diabetes and out of control cholesterol levels that are typical for the majority of America today, a healthy lifestyle will stimulate your children mentally as well as physically. During physical activity the lungs begin to work faster and take in large amounts of oxygen, while the heart pumps faster to deliver the oxygen to the muscles. Exercise boosts your stamina and endurance while creating muscle and burning fat. This process leads to a longer life with increased strength and flexibility, a stronger immune system and a positive mental state.” Personally I enjoy the bonding moments and quality time, getting to try new activities and revisiting ones I haven’t done in years… like roller skating..er…roller BLADING now. 😉

Go out and see tourist type places or National Monuments. When visiting those you aren’t just exercising your body but by learning about the places you are exercising your brain and encouraging critical thinking skills and wonder and curiosity! If you’ve never been to a National Park…WOW! Are you in for some wonderful experiences! Click here to find out when the free days are and what to do when you are there! You don’t even need to go to the National Parks to enjoy some great outdoor exercise, you can go to State Parks, local beaches for swimming, or lake side or board walk bicycle rentals. Listings for those should be accessible by a simple internet search of your area. But one thing is for sure, you need to sit down with the family and decide what activities everyone enjoys and the younger we start the kids with exercising, the better off their health (and recovery form illness and injury) will be!

The world is a great place to get out and see, the healthier and fit you and your family are, the more you’ll be able to enjoy it…and we want you around for a long, long time!

“How long do you keep at it?”

 I was conversing with a client the other day who has been having successes but has also fell a few times in her fitness and healthy eating. She asked me, ” How long do you keep going?” I asked her to go into more detail about what she was talking about. I thought she meant, how long should she keep trying to get better with her goals but that wasn’t her question at all. “How long do you keep at it? I mean, how long are you going to stick with me before you give up on me too?” The question totally caught me off guard. The thought of giving up on her never once crossed my mind, never.

My response, “As long as you don’t quit on you, I won’t quit on you.” The good Personal Trainers and Coaches don’t abandon their clients and their clients goals. They stick with them, Find what works for them. Make adjustments as necessary and keep moving forward. The goal is to get them where they want to be and teach them how to maintain their results. They need to have trust in you and confidence that you are looking out for their own good..not just taking their money.

 

Pill “Cabinet Parties” and “Vodka Eyeballing”? Really?!

As parents we all have concerns about what our kids will do when they go off to college. Where we entrust them to live by the morals and values we have taught them and while we understand and accept mistakes will be made..have you REALLY thought about what goes on out there on the college campuses? They aren’t what they were like when we attended you know. They have changed, courses improved, classes expanded, requirements increased..but oh! But I am talking about the kids!

With my son off to college I tried not to think of the dark side of things that sometimes happen on college campuses. The partying, late night study jams, fast food gorging, lack of exercise and nutrition, drugs, peer pressure, bullying (hazing) and more.

As a firefighter / EMT I had heard of some college parties where the kids would raid their parents prescription drug cabinets (also known as “pharming” or “punch bowl” parties) ,they bring all they could to the party location, dump them into a big bowl and as the party ensued the scare dare was to grab a handful for “mystery pills” chug them down usually with an alcoholic beverage to see what kind of result they would get. Pretty scary don’t you think?

Here is the definition of a “Pill Party”  or “Cabinet Party” according to the Urban Dictionary:

“A party in which people bring all different kinds of over the counter and prescription medications. It usually involves mixing all these pills together and placing them into shot glasses or other cups and taking them at once. It can lead to a high or altered fantasy state depending on the drug interactions and body’s response or it can lead to liver failure, heart and lung issues, and death if you are very unlucky in the pill mix you ingest. Hard core people also mix designer drugs. It is seen in high school and early college age groups.

However, here is something new to me. Have you heard of “Vodka Eyeballing”? Yes, no misspelled words there..Vodka Eyeballing. It is a foolish as it sounds.

I ran across this article and couldn’t help but shake my head because I could see many smart, young college kids feeling the pressure to cave in when at a party among friends, thinking only of this moment and not about the future and what this could mean to them. Despite the excruciating pain, they do the deed in an attempt to feel drunk faster. No thoughts of the damage being done to the eye (HELLO , maybe the PAIN is telling you something??) I hope that with this knowledge we have now, we will talk to our kids about the risks when participating in this sort of behavior. Is it worth it? Again I find myself shaking my head.

When venturing on the high school and college campuses I immediately saw a problem that was out of control. The problem with obesity and knowing the health issues associated with obesity and my passion for fitness decided I was going to make a change, I was going to be significant in someone’s life..hopefully many “someone’s”. I feel that alcohol and these parties are a contributing factor in the obesity epidemic in that with the drinking comes the out of control eating and then there is the following day…dehydrated and hung over.sleeping all day and feeling like crap? I’d rather feel alive and healthy and enjoy every single day I am blessed with! So today, I raise my jug (of water) to you and say “Cheers“…take a moment to talk to your kids about the drugs and alcohol and making smart decisions so that they can have the life you want for them and they deserve.

“Tough Mudder” – The Experience

Let me start off by saying that having never done this before, and knowing that I have panic attacks when I am in water that I even THINK may be deep enough to be over my head, I was a bit scared of this endeavor I was about to take on. The only comfort I had going into this was knowing that I was doing this with people who genuinely cared about me and I KNEW I could count on them if I needed them…and guess what, it turned out..I NEEDED THEM! When taking something like this on, you need to be able to count on your team to get you through..NO ONE can do this alone. For this one, my team consisted of my brother John, my brother Jason, my sister-in-law Megan, and my husband Scott, and Jason and Megan’s friend, Justin. We were “The Swampy Donkeys”!

On February 25, 2012 we set out for The Tough Mudder, in Temecula, Ca. at Vail Lake Resort..B-U-Tee-Ful place!! I would love to take a trip there if I were traumatized by this last experience…just kidding…it is gorgeous and I would love to spend some time there doing something other than the Mudder. I wish I had been able to take a picture from the top of one of the climbs because the view was amazing!

This challenge and that is what it is…they even say so, “This is not a race, this is a challenge!” I found it interesting when the man with the mic said that, In my head I couldn’t help thinking, “ just like life.” I don’t know why that popped in at that time, but it did.  We were off…through the mud and up the first “Death March”(this was the first of many uphill dusty dirty mountain climbs. I have to admit that I was pretty proud of my efforts…my success AND my failures. I did well! Somewhere along the way I managed to bang up my knee a bit..I have no idea when or where it happened.

There is a lot of good that can come out of a “challenge” like this. Finding out who you can depend on, who you can’t(glad I didn’t have any of those kind of people on my team), you have mental barriers to break through (one for me was during one of the “death marches” was having to think to myself, “If a Marine with only one leg can do this..I sure as hell can do it with two!” Let us also not forget that this is a fundraiser for “The Wounded Warrior Project” so not only are you doing something for yourself mentally and physically, but you are helping our American Heroes when you sign up for this.Image

“Quit whining and start running”… (Another sign to be read along the Mudder route),I think this is the approach we should all take in life. We can go slow…walk and whine, or we can move forward and know that the next challenge. Whether it is a “success” or if it is an “opportunity for improvement” (which is what I see every success attempt is).  There were some obstacles that although I was very proud I attempted, I did not complete (Chernobyl Jacuzzi), I know what to expect for next time…yes, NEXT TIME!

I, unfortunately, was not allowed into the military due to “moderate hearing loss” in my left ear when I attempted to enlist in the Air Force. Regardless…I am still part of a military family, and this allows me to help those who are also military or in a military family! That, is a GREAT feeling!

Wow, this sounds awesome! I’m Active Duty Military and would like to become an Independent Team Beachbody Coach, How do I signup?

Please complete the Coach application, and submit the completed Coach application, together with a copy of your active duty orders and verification of your active duty status – such as a military ID or your BIR, to Coach Relations for review and processing of your application. Submit paperwork via fax at: (213)201-7225 or by email to coachrelations@teambeachbody.com.

If they need more information they will contact you directly.

My spouse and I are both active duty military, may we both enroll as Independent Team Beachbody Coaches and have our fees waived?

Absolutely, yes! If you and your spouse are both active duty military and serving our great country, then by all means you both may enroll as Independent Team Beachbody Coaches, and you will each be eligible to have the enrollment fee of $39.95 and your monthly service fee waived. Both of you will need to fill out and complete our Coach Application and submit the application along with verification of your active status.

My husband/wife is active duty military however I would like to enroll as an Independent Team Beachbody Coach. Is this possible?

This is definitely possible. If you’re active duty and not a Beachbody Coach, your spouse is more than welcome to take advantage of this great benefit. Just be aware that your spouse will still have to submit a copy of your active duty orders and proper identification along with the application forms to qualify for the waiver, simply make sure to put the enrolling spouse’s name as the name on the Coach account.

If I’m active duty military, can another person other than my spouse enroll based on my Active Duty status?

Sorry, this is not available at this time. Also note that if only one of you are active duty, but you both want to join, only one of you will qualify to take the benefit. You will have to decide who gets to opt-in to the waived membership.

What do you mean when you say I have to be active duty military to qualify for the Free Beachbody Coaching for Military?

At the time that you submit your Coach application, we will also need you to include a copy of your active duty orders and verification of your status from your branch of service. Your active duty orders will generally include a start and end date. Based upon the end date given, your monthly business service fee will be waived for the duration of that period. If you are later reassigned to active duty please contact Coach Relations for further instructions.
